V O I P

VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol is a term that can also mean Internet Telephony, IP Telephony, Voice over Broad Band (VoBB) or simply broadband telephony. It is actually a method of voice communication used over the internet to deliver audio through live chats, videos and other multimedia sessions. In simple words VoIP simply converts speech or typical analog audio data to digital data for easy transmittance over long distances.

Broadly it could cover faxes, MMS, SMS and other voice message applications that are sent via the internet rather than a normal public switched telephone network. To make a successful VoIP call, the data must be signaled to a media channel set up for digitalization and further transmitted as Internet Protocol on both the sender and receiver ends.

Although VoIP has been around since the 1990s, poor bandwidth usually destroyed messages to such an extent that the user and receiver ended up frustrated with the whole experience. However VoIP today is not only popular but is used extensively by all types of users thanks to the increased bandwidth and faster internet provided by most internet service providers.

Mostly VoIP systems use session control protocols that help to minimize call set-up and tear-down significantly. They also use audio codecs that are basically included to encode speech to allow a smoother and better transmission over digital audio through the audio stream. In the same way some applications use compressed speech and narrowband or high fidelity stereo codecs to get the message across correctly and unhindered.

VoIP allows users to place calls in more than one simple way using just a computer, an internet connection and the mandatory software and in some cases new hardware. Starting with, the IP phones method that needs a standard telephone that uses an Ethernet connector as opposed to the traditional phone connectors. Here the telephone is hooked to a router that comes with the standard software and hardware components needed for this function. The router is then connected to the computer to connect to the internet successfully. In the case of Wi-Fi phones the IP call is made through the Wi-Fi hot spot.

The second method to make a successful VoIP call is to use an ATA or an analog telephone adaptor that connects a regular phone to the internet connection on your computer. The procedure here is simply to take data and convert it to digital messages for your computer. ATA connect is simple and hassle free requiring a new software at most for typical use.

Finally, VoIP calls can be made from one computer to another computer on the internet with just a sound and speedy internet connection. Additional hardware such as speakers, a sound card, a microphone and a web camera for video messages are enough to get you going. The sender sends messages and or pictures live to the receiver who receives them in a matter of seconds. This is a competent way to hear and see your caller live.

VoIP as a technology has changed communication all over the world by providing the easy exchange of messages and important data at a reasonably lower price than a regular long distance phone call. All the same VoIP cannot take the place of a regular telephone connection at times of emergencies, so don’t throw out your old phone just yet, hold on to it as a life saver device while you enjoy the infinite possibilities of VoIP.
